Practical Information for Your Kidney Care Journey
The earliest signs of kidney problems often include swelling in the legs or face, changes in urination such as increased frequency (especially at night), or the presence of blood or protein in the urine. As symptoms can be subtle, regular screening is important, especially if you have diabetes, hypertension or a family history of kidney disease.
Several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing kidney disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure, family history, age, race, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and smoking. Renal specialists from Singapore will most likely be able to determine which of these are the contributing factors through tests and consultation.
Kidney disease is usually diagnosed through medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Some standard tests that kidney clinics in Singapore may use to diagnose kidney disease include blood tests, urine tests, imaging tests, and kidney biopsies.
While some acute kidney conditions can be treated and reversed, treatment of chronic kidney disease focuses on slowing progression, controlling underlying conditions and preventing complications. With early intervention and appropriate care, patients can maintain good kidney function and enjoy quality of life.
The treatment choices for kidney disease depend on the severity of the disease and the underlying cause. A few common treatment options include lifestyle changes, medications, dialysis and kidney transplantation.
Your first consultation with a nephrologist will involve a detailed review of your medical history, medications and symptoms, followed by a physical examination. Blood and urine tests are commonly performed to assess kidney function, and imaging tests may be arranged if needed. Based on the findings, a personalised care plan will be discussed with you.
In some cases, kidney disease can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes and medical treatment. For example, kidney specialists from Singapore may recommend reducing your risk of developing kidney disease through regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, quitting smoking, managing diabetes and high blood pressure, and getting regular medical check-ups.
